Sambalpur, Nov 13: A significant boost for fire safety and disaster response is underway as a High-Level Committee chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved ₹725.62 crore for the expansion and modernization of fire services in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
The funding allocation includes ₹147.76 crore for Chhattisgarh, ₹201.10 crore for Odisha, and ₹376.76 crore for West Bengal.
This initiative, part of the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of building a disaster-resilient India, focusing on enhancing disaster risk reduction efforts. As part of a broader plan to modernize fire services across the country, the Centre has earmarked ₹5,000 crore, with states sharing the cost.
Odisha’s contribution is ₹50.27 crore, complemented by ₹150.83 crore from the Centre.
Since 2021, the Centre has released over ₹21,000 crore for disaster management, with fire services—vital for saving lives and property—identified as a key area for improvement. The 15th Finance Commission has also recommended targeted reforms to strengthen the infrastructure of state fire services, ensuring better preparedness and response to emergencies.
