Sundargarh, Sept 25: A series of ceiling collapses at the recently inaugurated Sundargarh Medical College and Hospital has raised serious safety concerns and sparked allegations of poor-quality construction work.
In the latest incidents, portions of the ceiling fell in two separate locations within just 24 hours. On Wednesday, the ceiling above the patient waiting area outside the X-ray department suddenly gave way. A day later, on Thursday, another section of the ceiling collapsed at the patient registration centre. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far, but the recurring incidents have left patients and staff in a state of panic.
Sources indicate that such collapses are not limited to isolated areas. Multiple sections of the hospital, including doctor chambers and OPD blocks, are reportedly facing similar structural issues, pointing to widespread construction flaws.
The Sundargarh Medical College, inaugurated just two years ago, was expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in western Odisha. However, the frequent incidents of ceiling collapse within such a short period have led to public outrage and growing demands for accountability.
"How can ceilings start falling within just two years of inauguration? If a major mishap had occurred, who would have taken responsibility?" questioned concerned citizens and patient families.
Allegations are now being directed towards the contractors and authorities responsible for the construction and quality assurance of the medical college infrastructure. An official inquiry is being demanded to determine the cause of the structural failures and to hold the responsible parties accountable.
As patient safety continues to be at risk, hospital authorities are under pressure to take immediate remedial action and ensure that such incidents do not repeat in the future.
