New Delhi, March 22: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened on Sunday to assess the ramifications of the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focused on ensuring the continued availability of critical resources for the Indian population, including food, energy, and fuel security, according to an official statement.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for a coordinated, whole-of-government response and ordered the formation of a dedicated group of ministers and secretaries to address the crisis arising from the conflict. The group will focus on both immediate and long-term strategies to mitigate the effects.
During the meeting, various short, medium, and long-term impacts of the West Asia conflict on the global economy were reviewed, particularly its consequences for India. The CCS discussed proactive counter-measures to shield India from potential disruptions, including those related to agriculture, fertiliser availability, food security, petroleum, power, MSMEs, and trade.
The committee also examined the broader macro-economic landscape, including steps to stabilize and protect sectors such as shipping, finance, supply chains, and export markets. Special attention was given to the impact on farmers, particularly regarding the supply of fertilisers needed for the upcoming Kharif season. It was noted that the country's efforts over the past few years to maintain adequate fertiliser stocks would ensure timely availability and protect food security.
The CCS also explored alternative sources of fertilisers to safeguard long-term supply. Additionally, it was confirmed that coal stocks at power plants are sufficient to prevent any electricity shortages in India.
In line with diversification efforts, measures to expand the sources of imports required by key sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and other industries were discussed. The committee also outlined plans to develop new export destinations to further promote Indian goods in the international market.
The CCS, the country's highest decision-making body on security and strategic issues, includes Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, alongside the Prime Minister.
