New Delhi, May 17: In a move aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all affiliated schools to set up dedicated "sugar boards" to monitor and reduce the sugar consumption of students.

Highlighting a growing health concern, CBSE officials noted a sharp rise in Type 2 diabetes cases among children over the past decade—a condition that was previously seen mostly in adults.

"This disturbing trend is largely due to high levels of sugar consumption, fueled by the easy access to sugary snacks, soft drinks, and processed foods on school premises," the board said in an advisory issued to school principals. "Excessive sugar intake not only raises the risk of diabetes but also contributes to obesity, dental issues, and other metabolic disorders. These, in turn, negatively affect students' overall health and academic performance."

The CBSE has urged schools to take proactive steps in raising awareness, revising canteen offerings, and involving parents in promoting balanced dietary habits among students.
