Kolkata, May 25: In a major breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Dr. Tapan Kumar Jana, head of the Anatomy Department at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, for his alleged involvement in a human organ trafficking racket.
Dr. Jana was taken into custody in Kolkata following an extensive overnight raid at his residence in Burdwan town, located in East Burdwan district. The operation began around midnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning.
During the raid, Dr. Jana was reportedly not at home. His wife, Dr. Sushmita Jana—herself a doctor at a medical college and hospital in Kolkata—told CBI officials that her husband was on duty at his Murshidabad workplace.
The arrested doctor is expected to be produced before a special court in Kolkata later on Sunday, where the CBI will seek his custody for further interrogation. Besides his role at Murshidabad Medical College, Dr. Jana is also linked to the National Medical Council (NMC) as an assessor.
The CBI has also uncovered allegations that Dr. Jana submitted falsified assessment reports for the NMC in exchange for bribes. A recent complaint from a medical college in Karnataka accused him of demanding ₹10 lakh to arrange a favorable NMC evaluation.
Investigators suspect Dr. Jana is part of a larger organ trafficking syndicate. During the raid, officials seized several incriminating items, including cash, gold, diamond jewelry, computer hard drives, and important documents.
The raid was conducted by a team of eight CBI officials who followed all procedural protocols, including informing the local police before commencing the operation.
