Dhenkanal, Sept 1: Network of canals near deep forests has been death traps for the jumbos.
It was revealed after an elephant and a calf accidentally got trapped in the Sapua main canal at Lahada village under the Hindol Forest Section in Dhenkanal a while ago.
A herd of elephants reportedly got a close shave from the deep canal flowing with full of water, forest sources said.
The forest officials after a tiring rescue operation, untrapped both the pachyderms with filling a part of the canal.
According to reports, a herd of elephants was passing through the canal area last night. However, a mother elephant and one of its tender calves fell into the canal while passing the gorge.
On being informed from the elephant tracking team, forest officials rushed to the spot with a bulldozer to rescue the elephants and covered the canal with soil to pave a path for the jumbos.
Following the rescue operation, both mother elephant and calf were guided into the Hindol Forest Range, a forest official said.
