Bhubaneswar, March 14: In the wake of the ongoing conflict in several West Asian countries and the heavy loss of civilian lives, the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) announced that it will not organise its annual Iftar and Eid Milan celebrations this year.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJD Vice-President and former Minister Pratap Jena said the decision was taken as a mark of solidarity with those affected by the war. He said the prolonged conflict has led to large-scale casualties, with thousands of innocent people killed, many more injured, and countless families displaced and forced to live in extremely difficult conditions.

Jena noted that the party traditionally hosts a grand Iftar and Eid Milan gathering every year in the presence of its president, Naveen Patnaik, bringing together members of the Muslim community and respected personalities from different faiths. However, considering the tragic circumstances unfolding in West Asia, the party felt it would be appropriate to refrain from holding celebrations this year and instead pray for peace.

Mohammad Mobin, BJD Minorities Cell Vice-President, said the ongoing war has created distressing conditions for many people from Odisha who are currently living and working in Middle Eastern countries. According to him, the conflict has directly affected more than ten countries, and its repercussions are being felt across the globe.

Mobin added that taking these developments into account, the party leadership decided to suspend the customary Iftar and Eid Milan programme this year.

Expressing deep concern over the extensive loss of lives and property in the conflict, Naveen Patnaik appealed to people to avoid celebrations during this tragic period.

It may be recalled that the former Odisha Chief Minister had earlier raised concerns about Odia tourists, students, professionals and workers stranded in Gulf countries during the crisis, urging both the state and the central governments to ensure their safe and immediate evacuation.
