Nabarangpur, April 15: A dispute over the last rites of an elderly woman in Dumurimunda village under Raighar block was resolved after nearly 30 hours of tension.
According to reports, some families in the village had converted to another religion. On Tuesday around 3 PM, Raymati Gond, an elderly woman from one such family, passed away. Following her death, a dispute erupted over the cremation of her body.
Villagers opposed performing the last rites at the local Hindu cremation ground, stating that the family had renounced Hinduism and therefore should not be allowed to use the facility.
The situation was later brought under control after the intervention of police, local administration, and the village sarpanch. After prolonged discussions, both sides reached a consensus.
It was agreed that the last rites of the deceased would be carried out on her private land in the presence of both parties.
The local administration stated that necessary steps would be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
