Mercury drops across state bringing shivers to residents

Winter has tightened its grip across the state as the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar issued a fresh alert regarding dropping temperatures. Residents in several districts should prepare for chilly conditions, with a "Cold Wave Warning" officially announced for the next three days (Day 1 to Day 3).

According to the latest bulletin from IMD Bhubaneswar dated January 12, 2026, dry weather currently prevails over the districts of Odisha. However, significant drops in night temperatures have been recorded. G. Udayagiri has emerged as the coldest location in the state, recording a freezing 4.8°C, the lowest minimum temperature among hill stations.

For the plains, Rourkela recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 6.7°C, followed closely by Phulbani at 6.8°C and Jharsuguda at 7°C. Other districts are also feeling the chill, with Sundargarh recording 9°C and Angul at 9.6°C.

Forecast and Warnings

Meteorologists predict that there will be no large change in the minimum temperature (night temperature) during the next 4 to 5 days across the state. Despite the stable trend, the intensity of the cold has prompted a Cold Wave warning for marked districts for the first three days.

Looking ahead, the weather department notes that from Day 4 to Day 7, there are no specific warnings issued, suggesting a potential stabilization in conditions later in the week.

Twin City Updates and Visibility

In the coastal belt, the capital city of Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 12.3°C, which is a departure of -2.9°C from the normal, while Cuttack recorded 11.4°C.

Visibility has also been affected in some areas. Moderate fog, reducing visibility to between 200 and 500 meters, was reported in Bhawanipatna. The highest maximum temperature in the state was recorded in Dhenkanal at 30.1°C.

Citizens are advised to stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions against the cold, especially during early morning and night hours.
