Bhubaneswar, June 6: BRICS member nations have praised Odisha for its remarkable achievements in disaster management, particularly its success in safeguarding lives during natural calamities and its consistent efforts to achieve near-zero casualties during major cyclones, Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said.

Addressing a joint press conference organised by the National Disaster Management Authority and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, following the conclusion of the three-day BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group Meeting in Puri, Pujari said the state’s disaster preparedness model received widespread appreciation from participating countries.

He noted that delegates from BRICS nations acknowledged Odisha’s sustained commitment to disaster risk reduction and its effective response mechanisms, which have significantly reduced the loss of human lives during extreme weather events.

“The successful hosting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Group meeting has further strengthened Odisha’s global reputation as a leader in disaster resilience and preparedness,” the minister said.

The three-day meeting served as a platform for participating countries to exchange knowledge, best practices, and strategies aimed at enhancing disaster risk management and building resilient communities.
