Moving film explores deep roots of Malaysia based Odias

Bhubaneswar: Cultural pride took center stage at the Museum of Natural History in Acharya Vihar this Friday. An emotional and historically significant documentary, Mu Malay Deshara Swabhimani Odia, was screened before an audience of historians, intellectuals, and film enthusiasts. Directed by noted storyteller and filmmaker Gourahari Biswal, the film offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Odia families who have made Malaysia their home for generations.

Tracing Roots Back 150 Years

Beyond just a visual narrative, the documentary delves deep into a migration story that began nearly a century and a half ago. The film captures the journey of families hailing from Odisha’s Ganjam, Khordha, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj districts. Approximately 150 years ago, these brave individuals traveled thousands of kilometers to places like Pedas, Bahau, and Kepis in Malaysia in search of livelihood.

Gourahari Biswal, who visited Malaysia in June 2025 to shoot the project, discovered a heartwarming reality in these remote areas. Despite the passage of time and geographical distance, the descendants of these migrants have stubbornly and lovingly held onto their "Odia Asmita" (Odia identity).

Preserving Culture Across Borders

Viewers were moved by scenes depicting how the Malaysian Odia community has kept their traditions alive. The documentary highlights that these families do not just speak the language; they have preserved the authentic food habits, festivals, and domestic traditions typical of an Odia household. It serves as a powerful testament to how culture can survive and thrive even on foreign soil.

Blending Technology with History

To bring this narrative to life, the production team utilized a creative mix of modern technology and historical truth. While the storytelling is enhanced by selected AI-generated visuals to reconstruct past eras, the filmmaker ensured strict factual accuracy by using only original archival footage for historical references.

A Gathering of Minds

The screening event was attended by prominent figures including Satyabrat (Sanu) Ratho of PNV Foundation, historian Anil Dhir from INTACH, Manther Harusu Naik and Satyabrat Nayak from Malaysia. Following the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, the guests were felicitated for their contributions to culture and history.

As the screening concluded, the auditorium erupted in emotional applause. The audience appreciated how Mu Malay Deshara Swabhimani Odia connects the current generation with a forgotten chapter of their history. The event wrapped up with a vote of thanks, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of pride in the global Odia community.
