Dhenkanal event unites runners for elephant conservation and fitness

Scenic foothills of Kapilash in Dhenkanal came alive with energy and enthusiasm as thousands of runners gathered for a significant cause. More than 5,000 participants from 14 different states across India converged to compete in the prestigious Tata Steel Half Marathon. This major sporting event was not just about speed and endurance but also focused on vital social and environmental themes.

Ministers Surya Bansi Suraj (Sports and Youth Development) and Krishna Chandra Patra (Food Supply and Consumer Welfare) jointly inaugurated the marathon, setting a vibrant tone for the day. The event held special significance as it coincided with the birth centenary of the legendary freedom fighter, Baji Rout, adding a layer of patriotic spirit to the competition.

Running for a Cause

Organizers designed the marathon to promote a healthy society while raising crucial awareness regarding wildlife conservation. Senior Tata Steel officials, including Vice President Sudhir Meheta and Corporate VP DP Sundaram, emphasized the urgent need to protect biodiversity. General Manager (Corporate) Shubhranshu Panda highlighted that the run specifically aimed to spread awareness about elephant conservation, a critical issue in the Kapilash region.

Race Categories and Winners

Competition remained fierce across three main distance categories: 5 km, 10 km, and the grueling 21 km half marathon. Participants competed in two distinct age segments—those aged 14 to 18, and adults above 18 years.

Athletes pushed their limits to claim a share of the impressive total prize pool, which amounted to ₹9.47 lakh. The atmosphere remained electric from start to finish as spectators cheered for the runners navigating the scenic routes of Dhenkanal.

Dignitaries in Attendance

Several prominent figures attended the event to show their support. Kamakshanagar MLA Shatrughna Jena, Hindol MLA Sima Nayak, and Angul MLA Pratap Pradhan were present alongside district administration officials. District Magistrate Asish Idea April (IAS), Superintendent of Police Abhinab Sonakar (IPS), and DFO Sumit Kar ensured the event concluded smoothly.

This successful edition of the Tata Steel Half Marathon has once again placed Dhenkanal on the national sports map, blending fitness with a commitment to nature.
