New Delhi, October 28: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notice to political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, the founder of Jan Suraaj Party, over allegations of dual voter registration in Bihar and West Bengal. The notice follows reports that Kishor is listed as a voter in both states, potentially violating the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The ECI has asked Kishor, who hails from Bihar, to provide clarification within three days regarding his dual voter registration. The notice raises concerns not only about his registration in two states but also about an address linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata. In this city, Kishor’s name appears on the electoral rolls.
As reported by The Indian Express, Kishor is listed as a voter at 121 Kalighat Road in Kolkata, which is also the address of the TMC office in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur constituency. Additionally, the ECI noted that Kishor’s name appears in the voter list of ‘Nirmal Hriday School, Beadon Street, Kolkata,’ while also being registered in the 209 Karahgar Assembly Constituency in Bihar (Part No. 767, Serial No. 621) with voter ID IUJ1323718.
Under Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, an individual is prohibited from being registered as a voter in more than one constituency. Any violation of this rule could result in penal action as outlined in Section 31 of the same Act.
In its notice, the ECI has called on Kishor to provide a detailed explanation within three days regarding his registration in multiple constituencies.
