Berhampur, Jan 29: The annual blackbuck census commenced today in the forest ranges of Ghumusar South, Ghumusar North, and Berhampur in Ganjam district. Forest officials are optimistic that the blackbuck population will surpass last year’s count of 404 individuals, thanks to improved conservation efforts and increased community awareness.

Eighteen teams, consisting of forest staff and local students, have been trained for the exercise at a special camp held at Lalsingh nursery in North Ghumusar. Divisional Forest Officer Himanshu Sekhar Mohanty provided instructions to ensure the smooth execution of the census, while Assistant Conservator of Forests Bibek Das stressed the importance of adhering to guidelines, including a ban on selfies with the endangered species to maintain report integrity.

The census will be conducted in two phases, during which teams will track the blackbucks across various habitats, recording sightings and movements. This data will provide updated information on the population and inform future conservation strategies.

Officials are hopeful that the blackbuck population has seen an increase due to ongoing conservation measures. The census is seen as a vital step in monitoring the health of the species, which is a symbol of Odisha’s rich wildlife heritage.

The findings of this year’s census are expected to bolster efforts to protect blackbucks from threats such as habitat loss and poaching. Conservationists are looking forward to the data, which will play a crucial role in shaping future wildlife protection policies in the region.
