Bhubaneswar, Dec 2: As preparations for the grand New Year’s Eve celebrations in 2026 kick off across hotels, pubs, and dance bars, the Excise Department has stepped up its vigilance to prevent any unlawful activities. Authorities are especially concerned about potential disturbances such as brawls, gang fights, and illegal alcohol consumption, which have marred previous year-end celebrations.

Excise Superintendent D. Patel stated that no event or private organization will be granted permission for Zero Night celebrations on December 31. This precautionary move aims to maintain law and order while ensuring compliance with regulations during the festivities. "We will not allow any events or celebrations without proper legal permissions. Additionally, we have set up several flying squads to keep a check on illegal activities," Patel added.

The Excise Department has also laid down clear guidelines for clubs and pubs, restricting their operating hours to midnight. Establishments that wish to stay open until 1:30 am may request a special license, but this will only be granted with approval and strict conditions. Any violations of the time limits will result in immediate action from the department.

Authorities will conduct surprise checks at hotels, bars, and clubs to ensure compliance with the regulations. In addition to monitoring alcohol consumption, officials will also focus on controlling the use of drugs such as brown sugar, cocaine, and cough syrups. The department has expressed particular concern over the growing involvement of drug mafias in New Year's celebrations.

"Regular raids are planned, and individuals found violating the law, particularly those dealing in illegal substances, will be arrested and prosecuted," said Patel. The department's proactive measures aim to ensure a safe and law-abiding environment during the New Year's celebrations while not allowing any unlawful behavior related to alcohol and drugs.
