New Delhi, June 25: BJP MP Om Birla officially submitted his nomination for the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Prior to filing his papers, Birla met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated Om Birla, while the opposition alliance, INDIA, has put forward Congress MP K Suresh for the same post.
On the first day of the 18th Lok Sabha session, 262 newly elected MPs, including PM Modi, were sworn in. The remaining 281 MPs, including prominent figures such as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, took their oaths today.
The election for the new Lok Sabha Speaker is scheduled for June 26. Following this, President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of both houses on June 27. Subsequently, both houses will discuss and pass a motion of thanks for her address, with PM Modi expected to respond to the discussions in the following week.
