Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, July 20: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra on Sunday said that the party will strongly raise the issue of the deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Speaking after attending an all-party meeting convened by the Centre ahead of the session, Sasmit Patra accused the BJP-led government in Odisha of presiding over a complete breakdown of law and order. “There is an alarming surge in heinous crimes against women and girl children in Odisha. What we are witnessing is a state descending into lawlessness and anarchy under BJP rule,” he said.

Patra cited a series of recent incidents to underscore the gravity of the situation. Referring to the tragic case of FM college student in Balasore district who died by self-immolation, he claimed that the victim had repeatedly reached out to elected representatives and state officials for help, but received no response.

“She contacted the BJP MP Pratap Sarangi from Balasore, the local administration, and even tweeted to the Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister. Despite her being an ABVP member and a student, no one came forward to help. Her death has shocked the conscience of the nation,” Patra said.

He also highlighted two other recent incidents — the alleged setting ablaze of a 15-year-old minority girl in Puri district and the assault on a senior Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officer. “Just yesterday, a young girl in Puri was set on fire by miscreants. Around 20 days ago, five local BJP leaders attacked the Additional Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. They were later arrested,” he stated.

Additionally, the BJD plans to raise the issue of the stampede during the recent Puri Rath Yatra, as well as other state-specific matters, in Parliament. “These incidents reflect a serious governance failure and must be addressed at the national level,” Patra asserted.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will run from July 21 to August 21, with a break on August 13 and 14 to accommodate the Independence Day celebrations.
