Bhubaneswar, Sept 15: Members of the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) staged a protest demanding urgent action to address the ongoing fertilizer crisis in Odisha in front of Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar today.
As per reports, the protest, which saw active participation from party workers and farmer leaders, was triggered by allegations that the state government had failed to meet the fertilizer needs of farmers, despite claims of adequate stock.
The protest began early in the day, with BJD leaders and supporters raising slogans against the state government’s handling of the crisis.
Amid growing unrest, BJD leaders and farmers attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati. However, their march was halted by a strong police presence and barricades set up to maintain order.
This led to a tense standoff between protesters and police, with demonstrators pushing against the barricades and police forces working to control the situation. For a brief period, the confrontation escalated, but no major clashes were reported.
Later, senior BJD leaders were allowed to meet the Governor and submit the memorandum, demanding urgent action to ensure that farmers have access to the fertilizers.
Following the submission of the memorandum, BJD leaders warned of extending the agitation to the block level, if demands aren’t met.
