Bhubaneswar, March 19: The BJD (Biju Janata Dal) has taken a proactive step in the run-up to the upcoming elections. Despite ongoing speculation about alliances, the party has initiated the candidate selection process for both Lok Sabha (21 seats) and Assembly (147 seats). This simultaneous election is scheduled to begin on May 13, 2024 in the state.
Naveen Patnaik, the BJD president has kickstarted the selection of candidates from the Puri and Kendrapada districts—both of which hold symbolic value and political significance for the regional outfit.
During a crucial meeting, senior leaders from both districts discussed poll strategies, focusing particularly on candidate selection for the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. Notably, alliance matters were not on the agenda during the meetings chaired by party supremo Naveen Patnaik.
An internal survey conducted by the BJD predicts that the party will secure 15 Lok Sabha seats and 126 Assembly seats. Given this projection, the party leadership believes that waiting for an alliance is not strategically advantageous at this point.
A senior leader said that with two months remains in hand to election, the BJD should proceed with the election process. The party aims to be fully prepared to contest all 21 Lok Sabha and 147 Assembly seats.
The BJD’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to securing a strong electoral position, even as the alliance landscape remains uncertain.
