Jodhpur, March 14: Renowned environmentalist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday after spending five months in detention. His release came after the Union government made the decision to revoke his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect.

Wangchuk, who is known for his advocacy for sustainable living and his role in promoting environmental conservation, was detained on September 26 of the previous year. The detention was ordered by the Leh District Magistrate, following concerns over his activities which allegedly posed a threat to national security. Wangchuk had been held under the NSA, a stringent law that allows for preventive detention without trial, for a period that could extend up to a year.

By the time of his release, Wangchuk had already served nearly half of the detention period permitted under the NSA. His detention had sparked widespread concern among activists, environmental groups, and supporters, who voiced their concerns over what they considered an infringement on his right to free speech and activism.

According to Dinesh Lakhawat, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Ratanada Police Station, Wangchuk was officially released around 1:30 pm on Saturday. Lakhawat confirmed that the release was based on an order from the central government. This decision marks the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty for Wangchuk, who had gained national recognition for his pioneering work in promoting eco-friendly solutions, especially in the harsh climates of Ladakh.

The news of his release has sparked a wave of relief among his supporters, with many viewing it as a victory for environmental activism and civil liberties. Wangchuk has been a vocal advocate for addressing the impacts of climate change, particularly in the Himalayan region, and his work has earned him recognition both in India and internationally.

As he steps out of jail, the climate activist is expected to resume his mission of promoting sustainable development practices and raising awareness about the environmental challenges facing not only India but the world at large.
