The wait is finally over. From Tuesday, the iconic Khandagiri Yatra Mahakumbh will unfold in all its colour, drama and grandeur, transforming the historic hillock into Odisha’s biggest celebration of folk theatre. As evening descends, the air will thrum with excitement, lights will dazzle the fairgrounds, and the unmistakable calls of opera troupes—“Hei hei lo… iaade iaade… aila aila”—will echo through the night, announcing the return of Odisha’s beloved yatra tradition.

This annual cultural spectacle is not just a treat for theatre lovers but a defining moment for hundreds of artistes who have waited all year to showcase their craft. From powerful dialogues that shatter the silence of the night to energetic dance sequences that set the stage ablaze, Khandagiri will once again become the epicenter of Odisha’s performing arts.

The Yatra Mahakumbha will run from January 27 to February 7. Across seven pandals and in two phases, as many as 15 renowned opera and yatra troupes will present their plays, promising nights filled with drama, emotion and entertainment.

A grand first phase

The first phase will see seven yatra troupes stepping onto the stage. At the Dr Harekrushna Mahtab Cultural Parishad’s Aiginia stage, Opera Ashok Samrat will open its innings with the much-discussed play “Adha Rahigala Ama Kahani”. Popular artistes like Milan, cine actor Ankit, villain Manoj, comedian Ganesh, actress Sara and Sarojini will bring the story to life.

At the Sanatan Seva Samiti stage in Ghatikia, Konark Gananatya will present its hit production “Tu Bodhe Mo Bhagya Re Nahu”, featuring veteran actor Daitari Panda alongside Mituna and Nalini.

Meanwhile, at the Jagamara stage under the Indira Sanskrutik Yuva Parishad, Yatra Singhbahini will stage its crowd-favourite play “Tu Mo Bajrangi”, with performances by Piyush, Kshitish, Sweety and Bablu.

Adding historical gravitas, the Ananta Kesari Deb Sanskrutik Yuva Parishad at the Khandagiri main stage will present “Chandashok” by Dhauli troupe, featuring actors Rudra, Smaranika, Lakshmidhar and Akash.

Anticipation builds for the next acts

From January 29, excitement will rise further as Swarna Mahal begins its run at the Jagamara stage under Maa Mangala Sanskrutik Yuva Parishad. While the title of the play is yet to be announced, the presence of veteran actor Subash Behera has already generated immense curiosity among audiences.

On the same day, Opera Shrimandir, presented by Jay Durga Sanskrutik Parishad, will stage “Janwar”, starring popular actor Kahna Swain and Tiki.

From January 30 onwards, Indrabhuban by Kalinga Sanskrutik Parishad will take over the Jagamara stage, adding yet another layer to the rich theatrical offering.

As preparations wrap up and curtains prepare to rise, Khandagiri stands ready to pulse with life once more. For the next twelve nights, stories will unfold, voices will soar, and Odisha’s timeless yatra tradition will reclaim its place under the stars—bigger, louder and more magical than ever.
