Bhubaneswar tops Odisha in traffic violations; Cuttack records highest fines

Bhubaneswar has recorded the highest number of motor vehicle law violations in Odisha over the past two-and-a-half years, according to data presented by the state government in the Assembly. Cuttack follows closely, with motorists there accounting for the highest amount of fines collected during the period.

Bhubaneswar, Sept 25: Bhubaneswar has recorded the highest number of motor vehicle law violations in Odisha over the past two-and-a-half years, according to data presented by the state government in the Assembly. Cuttack follows closely, with motorists there accounting for the highest amount of fines collected during the period.

The figures were provided by Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena in response to a question raised by MLA Pratap Keshari Deb regarding motor vehicle law violations and enforcement action across the state from 2024 to August this year.

According to the data, enforcement teams under the two Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Bhubaneswar issued a total of 13,884 e-challans during the period. RTO-I alone accounted for 9,496 challans. A total of 144 vehicles were also seized in the capital during the two-and-a-half-year period.

Cuttack, meanwhile, recorded the highest amount of fines collected. The Cuttack RTO issued 10,844 challans and collected Rs 1.07 crore in penalties.

Bhubaneswar ranked second in terms of fines collected. RTO-I collected Rs 56.85 lakh, while RTO-II collected Rs 25.46 lakh in penalties from traffic violators.

Jharsuguda also reported a significant number of traffic violations. The RTO issued 9,534 challans and collected Rs 53.67 lakh in fines during the period.

In Sambalpur, the RTO issued 7,896 challans and collected Rs 64.14 lakh in penalties.

At the other end of the spectrum, Nabarangpur recorded the lowest number of challans among the districts mentioned, with 989 cases and Rs 4.25 lakh collected in fines.

Across Odisha, enforcement agencies issued a total of 4,15,159 challans against motorists during the period and collected Rs 15.16 crore in fines.

The State Transport Authority (STA) alone issued 2,62,600 challans during the same period and collected Rs 2.60 crore in penalties.

The government data highlights the scale of traffic-law enforcement across the state, with major urban centres such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack accounting for a substantial share of challans and penalties.
