Bhubaneswar police arrested man for spreading rumours after Cuttack violence

Bhubaneswar, October 7: A man was arrested by the Bharatpur Police on Tuesday for allegedly spreading rumours and inflammatory content on social media in connection with the violence that erupted in Cuttack on October 3 during the immersion processions.

The accused, Pradeep Chandra Sahoo, a resident of Brahmeswar Patna under the jurisdiction of the Badagada Police Station in Bhubaneswar, is accused of posting objectionable and caste-based material online, which included abusive language and misinformation. These posts were believed to have the potential to disturb communal harmony.

During a routine review, the Commissionerate Police’s social media monitoring team flagged Sahoo’s posts, which were found to violate public order advisories. Despite repeated warnings from the Odisha Police and Commissionerate Police urging citizens to refrain from spreading fake news and inciting unrest related to the Cuttack incident, the accused continued to post provocative content.

In related developments, Commissioner of Police for Bhubaneswar-Cuttack, S. Dev Datta Singh, confirmed that the curfew imposed in Cuttack city had been lifted on Tuesday as the situation had returned to normal following a 36-hour shutdown.
