Bhubaneswar, July 18: In an unannounced visit today, Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra inspected the ‘Aahar Kendra’ located on the Capital Hospital premises in Bhubaneswar.
Demonstrating a hands-on approach, Dr. Mahapatra purchased a meal coupon and dined alongside the patrons, engaging with them to assess the quality of the food and their overall experience at the food center.
During his visit, Dr. Mahapatra emphasized the critical importance of maintaining cleanliness and high food quality standards. He ordered the immediate repair of a broken dishwashing machine to ensure hygiene is not compromised.
Speaking to the media, the minister affirmed the continuation of the food scheme, recognizing its vital role in serving the public. He also mentioned the possibility of a future review of the scheme's name.
Highlighting the state government's dedication to providing nutritious food in a clean and healthy environment, Dr. Mahapatra underscored the need to serve the poor with dignity. He proposed involving self-supporting mothers in the service to enhance quality, particularly given the rising costs.
The minister pointed out the significant subsidy provided by the government, with the state covering ₹23 of the cost per meal, and diners contributing ₹5.
The affordable cooked food scheme, launched on the day of Holy Uttara in April 2015, currently operates 168 centers across 115 urban areas in Odisha. All centers and kitchens are ISO certified and GEO linked, with 61 centers offering night meals. The scheme successfully provides one lakh meals daily to the public.
Dr. Mahapatra also instructed officials to maintain cleanliness and ensure the proper placement of dust bins at the center, reinforcing the commitment to a hygienic dining environment.
