Bhubaneswar launches comprehensive stray dog census to improve animal welfare

Bhubaneswar, Sept 18: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a comprehensive stray dog census on Thursday, covering all 67 wards in the city. This initiative aims to collect precise data on the stray dog population, which will aid in planning effective animal birth control (ABC) drives and enhancing animal welfare.

The census was conducted between 5:00 am and 7:00 am under the supervision of expert veterinarians, with active participation from Swachh Sathis, Swachh Supervisors, and Sanitary Inspectors. A total of 410 teams, consisting of veterinarians, civic officials, Swachh Sathis, sanitation workers, and supervisors, carried out the survey in two phases, employing scientific methods. The counting will take place daily during the early morning hours when street dogs are most visible in localities.

The primary objectives of the census include determining the total number of street dogs, assessing dog density across BMC areas, formulating effective strategies for dog control and management, improving street dog health and welfare, and preventing disease transmission, such as rabies.

BMC Mayor Sulochana Das urged citizens to cooperate with the enumerators involved in this crucial task. By collecting accurate data, the BMC aims to implement targeted measures to reduce dog bite incidents, prevent disease transmission, and improve overall animal welfare.
