History: How it all began
The foundation of Bhubaneswar as the capital of Odisha dates back to April 13, 1948, when the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone. Before this, Cuttack served as the capital of Odisha. However, due to space constraints and the need for a well-planned administrative city, Bhubaneswar was chosen.
The vision for the new capital was brought to life by German architect Otto Königsberger, who designed Bhubaneswar as one of India’s first planned cities. Wide roads, designated residential and administrative zones, and ample green spaces were part of the original blueprint—making it a model urban center in post-independence India.

In its initial days, Bhubaneswar was a quiet town with ancient temples, most notably the iconic Lingaraj Temple. Gradually, government offices, residential colonies, and public institutions began to develop, shaping the city into the administrative heart of the state.
