Bhubaneswar Foundation Day: From vision to a modern capital

Bhubaneswar, April 13: Bhubaneswar, often known as the “Temple City of India,” celebrates its Foundation Day every year on April 13-marking the birth of a planned capital that blends heritage with modernity.

History: How it all began

The foundation of Bhubaneswar as the capital of Odisha dates back to April 13, 1948, when the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone. Before this, Cuttack served as the capital of Odisha. However, due to space constraints and the need for a well-planned administrative city, Bhubaneswar was chosen.

The vision for the new capital was brought to life by German architect Otto Königsberger, who designed Bhubaneswar as one of India’s first planned cities. Wide roads, designated residential and administrative zones, and ample green spaces were part of the original blueprint—making it a model urban center in post-independence India.

The early years

In its initial days, Bhubaneswar was a quiet town with ancient temples, most notably the iconic Lingaraj Temple. Gradually, government offices, residential colonies, and public institutions began to develop, shaping the city into the administrative heart of the state.

Growth and transformation

Over the decades, Bhubaneswar witnessed rapid urbanization. From a modest administrative town, it transformed into a thriving city with modern infrastructure, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. The development of sectors, improved road networks, and planned expansion gave the city a unique identity among Indian capitals.

The emergence of IT parks, smart city initiatives, and world-class sports infrastructure further accelerated its growth. Today, Bhubaneswar is recognized as a major center for education, healthcare, and sports in eastern India.

Bhubaneswar today

Modern-day Bhubaneswar stands as a perfect blend of tradition and progress. While it preserves its rich cultural and architectural heritage through its ancient temples, it also embraces contemporary development with smart governance and sustainable urban planning.

The city has earned recognition under the Smart Cities Mission and has hosted several national and international sporting events, enhancing its global profile. Clean streets, green landscapes, and organized urban planning make it one of the most livable cities in India.

A city moving forward

As Bhubaneswar celebrates its Foundation Day, it reflects not just on its past but also its aspirations for the future. From a visionary plan in 1948 to a vibrant and growing urban hub today, Bhubaneswar continues to evolve-carrying forward a legacy of culture, resilience, and progress.
