Bhubaneswar, May 18: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation's (BMC) first women vending zone has resulted in failure.

The women special vending zone was constructed to inspire women into small scale business.

Most of the shops of the model vending zone located on Cosmopolis Road in Dumduma area of the city have remained closed after over one year of its inauguration by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on April 19 last year.

According to reports, out of the 40 stalls of the vending zone, 25 kiosks have been allocated so far by the BMC and only seven to eight shops are operating in the vending zone while many are being run by men.

"As the nearby Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were not selected in the allotment process, some closed their shops after few days of opening due to inconvenience in communication. The local SHGs of ward no 64, 65 and 66 should get priority in the allotment process," said a former corporator.

The vending zone has all necessary facilities like lighting, drinking water, toilet, seating bench and parking area. The BMC has fixed its rent @ Rs 700 per month.
