Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is spending around Rs 4 crore per annum to address its legal challenges.

The civic body has spent Rs 3.75 crore by January and around 2500 cases are running against it at different courts, including Orissa High Court, NHRC, Odisha Lokayukta, Loka Adalat, SDJM court and Labour Court.

The BMC has appointed 31 lawyers to address its legal problems. A lawyer takes Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per hearing and extra expenses for High Court cases.

Despite spending crores of rupees on lawyers, the civic body is depositing lakhs of penalty for failing to appear in courts and implement court orders.

On being asked, BMC legal cell deputy commissioner Raj Kishore Jena said all the cases are sub judice. So, we can't say anything. Besides, he avoided the question regarding the Rs 4 crore the civic body is spending on lawyers per annum.
