Kendrapara, Aug 1: Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha's Kendrapara district, is set to reopen to tourists on August 1, after being closed since May 1. The closure is an annual measure to protect estuarine crocodiles during their breeding season, which typically runs from May 1 to July 31. This period is critical as the reptiles lay eggs and can become more aggressive, posing potential risks to visitors.
With the reopening, tourists will have the opportunity to explore several attractions within the park. One notable feature is the Meta Nursery, which showcases a diverse collection of trees and plants, offering insights into the region's rich flora. Additionally, the Boat Library will be available, providing a unique blend of wildlife observation and educational resources. The library offers a collection of books that detail the park's ecosystems, enhancing visitors' understanding and appreciation of the area's biodiversity.
New attractions at Bhitarkanika include the rare Albino crocodile, a highlight for many wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can capture memories at designated selfie points and enjoy boat rides that offer close-up views of crocodiles in their natural habitat. The park has enhanced its boating facilities, now featuring six fibre boats at Dangmal and four at Gupti, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience for tourists.
The park's reopening is eagerly awaited by nature lovers and wildlife photographers, eager to explore one of India's most significant mangrove ecosystems. Bhitarkanika is renowned for its biodiversity, including a variety of wildlife species such as saltwater crocodiles, migratory birds, and unique flora.
Tourists planning to visit are advised to book their trips online through the park's official website. The park offers various accommodations, including rest houses in Dangamala, Habalikothi, and Gupti, which attract visitors from across India and abroad.
