Bhadrak, May 24: The Bhadrak district administration has launched a dedicated campaign to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its famous traditional sweet, ‘Palua Ladu’. Made from arrowroot powder (palua), semolina, and sugar, this artisanal delicacy is celebrated for its unique taste and cultural significance.
As part of the initiative, Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routrai has directed officials to feature ‘Palua Ladu’ in hospitality packets at official events to promote its heritage and raise awareness about its regional importance.
Securing the GI tag is expected to preserve the sweet’s legacy, enhance the local economy, and bring global recognition to Bhadrak’s culinary traditions. The district administration is actively collaborating with local sweet makers and cultural organizations to document the history and traditional methods used in preparing ‘Palua Ladu’.
If successful, ‘Palua Ladu’ will join the ranks of Odisha’s other GI-tagged specialties, such as ‘Rasagola’ and ‘Kandhamal Haldi’, further elevating the state’s gastronomic profile. The move is also aimed at empowering traditional confectioners and promoting Odisha’s rich food heritage on both national and international platforms.
