Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: Odisha’s waters are witnessing a remarkable surge in dolphin populations, with six species now adding to the state’s marine biodiversity. According to the latest survey, the state has a total of 765 dolphins and other cetaceans, of which 495 are humpback dolphins, marking the highest number recorded in the past five years.

The survey highlights Chilika Lake as a major habitat for the Irrawaddy dolphin, one of the state’s most iconic species. Out of the 208 Irrawaddy dolphins recorded statewide, 159 were sighted in Chilika. In 2020-21, the lake had 209 dolphins, followed by 208 the next year. In contrast, only 16 humpback dolphins were observed in Chilika waters.

Other regions also reported dolphin sightings. The Balasore coast had 15 Irrawaddy dolphins, while Berhampur’s marine waters hosted 13, marking the second consecutive year of their presence there. In Puri, 12 Irrawaddy dolphins were spotted, the first sighting in three years, including 4 individuals recorded in 2023.

Rajnangar, however, has the highest concentration of humpback dolphins in the state, with 474 individuals. It also hosts 5 bottlenose, 3 spinner, and 2 finless porpoise dolphins, totaling 493 dolphins in the area. Compared to last year, dolphin numbers in Rajangar have decreased by 12. The survey also recorded 55 bottlenose, 3 spinner, and 2 finless porpoise dolphins across the state.

Prem Kumar Jha, PCCF (Wildlife), described the findings as a significant success for Odisha’s coastal conservation efforts. He credited the protection of permanent dolphin habitats, scientific monitoring, and local community involvement for the positive outcomes.

The 1,100 sq km saline lake of Chilika continues to serve as a safe haven for the Irrawaddy dolphin. Researchers plan to conduct further studies to monitor the expansion of their habitat in other areas of the state.
