Bhubaneswar, Oct 21: Bhubaneswar was blanketed in a dense layer of smog on Monday night following Diwali celebrations as the capital city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) alarmingly crossed 600, indicating “severe” pollution levels.

Several localities, including Rasulgarh, Baramunda, and Patia, witnessed drastically reduced visibility, with reports stating it dropped to as low as 20 metres in some areas. Laxmisagar recorded the highest pollution levels in the city, adding to concerns over public safety and health.

Despite directives from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) restricting firecracker usage to between 7 PM and 9 PM, many residents ignored the guidelines.

Fireworks began well before the permitted window and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, significantly deteriorating the city’s air quality.

Environmental experts have expressed serious concern, warning that such toxic pollution poses immediate health risks, especially to children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues.

“Prolonged exposure to such high levels of air pollution can lead to long-term respiratory complications. The public must be more mindful of how their celebrations impact community health and the environment,” said an environmental specialist.
