Koraput, Dec 4: As winter sets in, Koraput, known for its scenic beauty and tourist spots, is witnessing an influx of tourists from various states, eager to enjoy the chilly weather and explore the region's natural landscapes. The opening of Odisha's first dual tunnel has further added to the region’s appeal, attracting even more visitors.
The tunnel, part of a larger infrastructure project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, is being seen as a game-changer for both tourism and economic development. The project was initiated with the approval of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in 2017, to improve connectivity between key regions in Odisha and beyond.
According to Ajit- a tourist from Narayanapatna, “Every year, tourists flock to Koraput to experience its cool weather, and this year, the opening of the dual tunnel has further spiked their interest. The region is also benefiting from the Bharatmala project, which aims to improve road connectivity, facilitate tourism, and enhance economic growth. The highway project from Raipur to Koraput and Vishakhapatnam is set to be a major boost. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the expressway in November 2022, and the project, valued at Rs 20,000 crore, will span over 464 km with six lanes.
Balaram Prusti from Bhadrak says, “The road leading to Koraput is stunning, with lush greenery, hills, and forests on both sides, making it a picturesque journey for visitors. The dual tunnel, which is a key feature of Odisha's infrastructure development, has been completed and is now open for public use. This tunnel, located near Baraj Gram under Pattanagi Block, has been constructed using modern techniques, and its strategic position will ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time. The tunnel is 3.4 km long, cutting through a hill using advanced machinery to ensure the safety of travelers. The tunnel is equipped with high-quality lighting, ventilation systems, and other amenities to provide a comfortable experience.”
Inside the tunnel, colorful murals and art designs have been painted on the walls, adding an aesthetic touch to the infrastructure. The area around the tunnel is also adorned with a vibrant tricolor flag and various plants, making it a popular photo spot for tourists. Visitors have been seen taking photos, posting on social media, and even filming reels and album shoots in this unique setting.
The dual tunnel in Koraput is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the region's economy by boosting tourism, increasing connectivity, and enhancing overall infrastructure. Local residents and businesses are hopeful that the tunnel will bring more opportunities and contribute significantly to the district’s growth.
