Cuttack, Feb 05: Hosts Odisha failed to register their second successive Ranji Trophy victory at home this season, as Puducherry skipper Arun Karthik played gem of a knock again on Monday to drag the match to a drawn result.

Chasing a victory target of 240, Puducherry lost regular wickets on the final day of the Group D Ranji Trophy battle at Barabati Stadium, here. But captain Karthik stood tall with an unbeaten 58 (98 balls) to deny Odisha a home win.

Karthik, who scored a superb 110 in 175 balls in the first innings, was the lone ranger in Puducherry's second innings too, holding the fort with a fighting 58* to save his side from jaws of defeat.

Being the keeper and captain of the side, Karthik not only led his team brilliantly, but held also five catches behind the stumps. He was the lone centurion of the match. Karthik was rightly adjudged the 'Player of the Match', for his valid contributions.

Earlier, Odisha with a win in mind, went on an all out attack on Day 4 Barabati track against the visitors and scalped 8 wickets. But just could not get Karthik, who held one end and refused Odisha a win.

Puducherry were 175/8 in 56 overs, when umpires called off play for the final day, adjudging the match to be a Draw.

Earlier in the day, Odisha were all out for 201 in 68 overs in their second innings, with Govinda Poddar's 46.

With no result in the match, Odisha got 3 vital points based on the first innings lead, while Puducherry were awarded 1 point.

After five matches, Odisha now have 12 points and are placed 5th in the Group D Points Table. Puducherry with 13 points from as many outings are placed third. The first two spots are being held by Baroda (23) and Madhya Pradesh (19).

Jammu and Kashmir, who earlier beat Odisha in Tangi DRIEMS Ground, have 12 points like Odisha, but due to a better run rate are placed at 4h place.

This season. Odisha have played five matches so far. They have won one, lost two and managed a first innings lead in two outings. Before sharing honours with Puducherry at Barabati, they did beat Himachal Pradesh at DRIEMS Ground (Tangi), Cuttack.

Prior to that, Odisha have lost to Baroda by 147 runs in Vadodara, drawn with Madhya Pradesh in Indore (enjoyed first innings lead though), lost to Jammu and Kashmir in DRIEMS Ground, Cuttack by 2 wickets.

Brief Scores:

Odisha  322 & 201.

Puducherry 284 & 175/8.
