Jaleswar, Sept 8: Following low pressure-induced incessant rain, the Jalaka River was flowing above the danger mark at Mathani under Basta block in Balasore district on Friday morning.
The water level in the river was flowing at 6.43 meters against the danger level of 5.50 metre.
Several panchayats of Basta and Sadar blocks are likely to be affected if the water level continues to rise. The river flowing through the Basta area of Balasore is in spate following low pressure-induced continuous rain upstream at Suliapada, Morada, Titrada, and Rasgovindpur areas of the Mayubhanj district.
According to reports, people living on both sides of the river are in a state of panic apprehending floods with the increase in the flow of water in the river which could cause breaches in the embankments which are weak at certain places.
Due to low pressure, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at isolated places in Malakangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts today.
