Shocking CCTV footage exposes temple offering theft scandal

Police have arrested a second temple official involved in an organized Badrinath Dham donation theft scheme. Special Investigation Team officers detained Rajendra Chauhan on July 17 after summoning him to the local police station from Jyotirmath. Chauhan was a permanent employee of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee and oversaw the daily counting process for temple offerings.

CCTV cameras recorded undeniable proof of trusted workers betraying the faith of millions of pilgrims. Footage from late June clearly showed Chauhan stuffing bundles of 500-rupee notes and valuable donated jewelry directly into his pockets. Badrinath Dham serves as a vital Char Dham pilgrimage destination, drawing immense daily crowds and generous spiritual offerings, which makes this insider breach of security particularly severe. Investigators quickly discovered that Chauhan conspired with another named suspect, Pramod Nautiyal, to systematically loot cash and precious items from the collection boxes.

Missing Valuables Reveal Shocking Greed

Officers arrested Nautiyal earlier on July 12 based on initial complaints of financial irregularities. Investigators allege he illegally removed cash, packets of gold and silver coins, a sacred Shaligram stone, and even a packet of saffron from the highly secure counting room. Following these serious allegations, temple authorities swiftly suspended Nautiyal and issued a formal show-cause notice regarding his misconduct.

Electronic Evidence Strengthens Police Case

Investigators rigorously analysed video footage from the counting facility across multiple days to build a strong, airtight case. Police also recorded statements from numerous witnesses to firmly corroborate the visual evidence. Authorities formally added charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after clearly identifying Chauhan as a co-conspirator in this organised operation. Both men now face serious legal consequences for deliberately exploiting their religious positions of power. They currently remain in judicial custody as the local probe continues to uncover the full extent of this financial crime.
