Bhubaneswar, Sept 21: A 17-month-old elephant named "Abhi" at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha has tested positive for the herpes virus, raising concern among the zoo authorities.
Abhi is exhibiting symptoms such as increased body temperature and redness on his skin, said the zoo administration.
Currently, Abhi is not eating well, prompting veterinarians and professors from the zoo to closely monitor his condition. A team has been instructed to keep a 24-hour vigil on the baby elephant.
Abhi resides in the elephant health care centre along with two other elephants, Lisa and Asha, who were previously infected with the virus in August but have recovered.
Abhi was rescued from a forest near Ghatagaon of Keonjhar when he was just two months old on June 25, 2023. He was found wandering alone in the forest, and local villagers brought him to safety.
However, due to human contact, his mother did not accept him. As a result, the Forest Department transferred Abhi to Nandankanan Zoo for rehabilitation.
