Assault on Captain and his fiancée by cops: Orissa HC prohibits publication of victim’s identity

Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: The Orissa High Court on Monday took suo motu cognizance of the case involving the custodial assault of a Captain and his fiancée by the Bharatpur police in Bhubaneswar City.

Acting on the submission of the victim’s family members, Ex-servicemen outfits and the Army authorities, the Orissa High Court has taken the matter with deep concern.

Restraining the order passed in this connection earlier, the Orissa High Court prohibited publication of the identity of the victims as well as the associated police personnel in any manner. 

Further, ruling on the status of CCTV cameras in the Bharatpur Police Stations, IG Modernization was asked to monitor the installation of CCTV cameras. 

In the ruling, the IG Modernization has been asked to report the CCTV status of all police stations across the state. The High Court sought an affidavit from the police authorities regarding the specific timeline by which installation or repair of CCTVs will be completed in all police stations.

According to Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, the Orissa High Court while hearing the pleas, appreciated the government’s perspective and the proactive measures taken to deliver justice to the Army Captain and his fiancée. However, the Orissa High Court refused to monitor the investigation.
