Bhubaneswar, AP 16: Ashok Ashtami, also known as Ashokastami, holds profound significance as it is associated with Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva. This festival, predominantly observed in Odisha, is particularly celebrated with grandeur at the renowned Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar. Falling on the eighth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Chaitra month, this year it falls on April 16.
Additionally, Ashok Ashtami is also commemorated during Navratri in the month of Ashwin. Devotees fervently offer prayers to Goddess Shakti, seeking her blessings and favor. The festival is embraced with immense enthusiasm and devotion.
Numerous legends enrich the narrative of this festival. One such legend narrates how Lord Ram, facing difficulty in defeating Ravana due to the latter's protection by Goddess Shakti, sought counsel from Ravana's brother, Bibhishan. Following his advice, Lord Rama conducted a seven-day puja at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, entreating the blessings of Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva.
On the eighth day, Goddess Shakti bestowed her blessings upon him, empowering him to vanquish the demon using Brahmashtra. This significant event symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, commemorating Lord Rama's victory. Thus, the festival is celebrated with exuberance and jubilation.
Furthermore, the Ashok Ashtami Fair is also organized at Unakoti Tirtha of Kailashahar Sub-Division in Tripura. Special pujas are conducted to honor the deities engraved on the rocky hillsides, adding to the spiritual fervor of the occasion.

Why is Ashok Ashtami Puja celebrated?
In India, various festivals pay homage to the splendor of nature. According to Hindu scriptures, divinity permeates every particle, thus venerating trees is akin to worshiping the divine. In the Sanatan culture, the reverence for nature resonates throughout every festival.
Each tree holds significance beyond its role as a life sustainer; they contribute to our prosperity as well. The Ashoka tree, known for bestowing happiness and tranquility, embodies this connection between nature and human life. The Ashok Ashtami festival underscores the importance of nature in our existence.
Legend holds that the Ashoka tree has its origins in Lord Shiva. Worshiping this tree is believed to invoke blessings from Lord Shiva. To attain desired objectives or fulfill wishes, it is customary to offer milk to the roots of the Ashoka tree and tie a thread around it. The veneration of Ashoka trees holds significance from both religious and scientific perspectives.
