Bhubaneswar, Jan 31: The sacred Mahadeepa (lamp) will be raised atop the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar at 10 PM on February 15, marking the culmination of Maha Shivaratri celebrations. This highly anticipated ritual signifies the divine union of Shiva and Shakti, and it plays a central role in the festival observed across temples, especially in Odisha.

Maha Shivaratri, celebrated on February 15 this year, is a time for intense prayer and fasting. Devotees across the state traditionally break their fast only after the Mahadeepa is raised at the Shiva shrines. At the iconic Lingaraj Temple, which dates back to the 11th century, thousands of worshippers gather to witness the momentous event.

The festivities at Lingaraj Temple begin early in the morning and continue throughout the day. Devotees engage in prayers and rituals, culminating in the lighting of the sacred Mahadeepa, a moment of deep spiritual significance. This ritual, more than just lighting a lamp, represents the pinnacle of the day’s religious observances, after which devotees can break their fasts in reverence.

To ensure the smooth execution of this grand event, the temple administration held a meeting on Friday to finalize the arrangements. Key discussions focused on maintaining safety, security, and the overall peaceful atmosphere of the celebrations. With large crowds expected, the administration is keen to provide a serene and devotional environment, making the Mahadeepa lighting an unforgettable experience for all.

As per the meeting’s decisions, the Mahadeepa will be lifted at precisely 10 PM, marking the sacred moment when worshippers conclude their fasts after a day of devotion and prayer.
