Tarique Rahman Takes Charge: A New Dawn for Bangladesh

BNP leader begins new era after landslide election victory

Dhaka: After a decisive victory in the general elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman is set to take the oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh today. This event marks a significant shift in the country's political landscape following the ouster of former PM Sheikh Hasina in 2024.

Rahman, the son of the late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has returned to the political forefront after a 17-year exile. His leadership guided the BNP to a commanding majority in the February 12 elections, securing over 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament.

India’s Representation at the Ceremony

India has reaffirmed its commitment to its neighbor by sending Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to attend the swearing-in ceremony. According to the External Affairs Ministry, Speaker Birla’s presence highlights the deep, enduring friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh. The visit underscores a continued dedication to democratic values shared by both nations, despite the shifting political tides in Dhaka.

Ceremony Details and Uncertainties

Elected BNP MP Rashiduzzaman Millat confirmed to the media that the oath-taking for parliament members is scheduled for 9:30 am at the Parliament Bhawan, followed by the ministerial oath at 4:00 pm. While high-profile leaders from India are attending, it was confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Pakistan will not be present.

However, some confusion remains regarding the procedural aspects of the new government. Reports suggest uncertainty over whether MPs will need to take a second oath for a proposed constitutional reform council. Sources within the BNP have stated they prefer adhering strictly to the existing constitution, which does not currently account for such a council.

Election Breakdown

The recent polls saw a reshape of alliances. The BNP-led alliance secured a total of 212 seats, cementing their power. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami, previously an ally, contested separately and emerged as the main opposition with 77 seats. The Bangladesh Awami League was barred from participating in these elections.
