New Delhi, Sept 18: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at a government hospital in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, performed a complex awake craniotomy while the patient watched a film starring Jr. NTR. This innovative procedure allows the patient to remain conscious during surgery.
The 55-year-old patient, A. Ananthalakshmi, underwent the operation to remove a brain tumor after experiencing symptoms such as numbness in her limbs and persistent headaches. A 3.3 x 2.7 cm tumor was diagnosed on the left side of her brain. Due to the high costs of treatment at private hospitals, she opted for the surgery at the Government General Hospital (GGH).
To help keep Ananthalakshmi calm and focused during the procedure, the medical team screened scenes from her favorite film, Adhurs. The successful operation lasted two and a half hours, and doctors anticipate that she will be discharged within five days.
Awake craniotomy, initially used for treating epilepsy, is now commonly performed for tumor resection. Keeping the patient awake allows neurosurgeons to maximize tumor removal while preserving neurological function.
Just a week prior, a similar surgery was conducted at Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute in Uttar Pradesh, where a 56-year-old patient remained fully awake and engaged with his mobile phone, reducing the risk of nerve damage. Earlier this year, a five-year-old girl at AIIMS Delhi underwent awake surgery to remove a dangerous brain tumor, during which she interacted with the doctors and recognized a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
