Jammu, July 10: Amid heightened security measures, another group of 4,627 pilgrims embarked on the Amarnath Yatra to Kashmir on Wednesday. The pilgrimage, which commenced on June 29, has proceeded peacefully, according to officials from the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB).
"Today, a convoy of 1,854 pilgrims departed Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu for the North Kashmir Baltal base camp at 3:07 a.m. Another convoy carrying 2,773 pilgrims left at 3:33 a.m. for the South Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp," stated officials. Each convoy was escorted by security personnel, comprising 90 and 95 vehicles respectively.
Following a recent terrorist attack in Kathua district, security measures along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway have been intensified, the primary route for pilgrims heading to Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has forecast partially cloudy weather with chances of light rain along both Yatra routes.
Pilgrims can opt for either the traditional 48 km Pahalgam route or the shorter 14 km Baltal route to reach the cave shrine. Those using the Pahalgam route typically take four days for the journey, whereas those using the Baltal route return to the base camp the same day after darshan.
The cave shrine, situated at an altitude of 3888 meters, houses an ice stalagmite structure revered as representing the mystical powers of Lord Shiva. Extensive security arrangements have been implemented across the Jammu-Srinagar highway, Yatra routes, base camps, and the shrine itself to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage experience.
Additionally, over 124 langars (community kitchens) have been set up along both routes and at transit camps, supported by over 7,000 volunteers (sevadars) catering to the needs of pilgrims. Helicopter services are also available for pilgrims on both routes, enhancing accessibility to the sacred site.
