Bhubaneswar, July 17: The Amarda Road airstrip, a former World War II airfield in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj District, will soon become operational, according to State Commerce and Transport Minister Bhibhuti Bhusan Jena.

Jena made this announcement following a discussion with Odisha Housing and Urban Development and Public Enterprises Minister Krishna Chandra Mahapatra about the development of the old airstrip.

The Commerce and Transport Minister reviewed the progress of the work and instructed the relevant authorities to complete the necessary formalities promptly. The central government has allocated Rs 45 crore for the development of the Amarda Road airstrip as part of a scheme to revive and develop unserved airports, heliports, and water aerodromes across India.

Constructed in the 1940s, the Amarda airstrip features an 11,000-foot concrete runway.

Jena stated that the proposal to renovate the airstrip under the UDAN scheme will soon come to fruition, transforming it into a commercial airport with additional land acquisition and necessary infrastructure.
