PM Modi G20 Summit Visit to Focus on AI, Climate & Canada Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has touched down in Johannesburg, South Africa, marking the beginning of a significant diplomatic mission. Arriving late Friday evening, the Prime Minister is set to engage in the G20 Leaders’ Summit, where his agenda is firmly focused on amplifying the voice of the developing world and addressing critical global challenges.

This visit represents a historic milestone as the G20 gathers on African soil for the very first time. For Prime Minister Modi, this is his 12th participation in a G20 Summit since he assumed office in 2014. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that the Prime Minister will be a key speaker across all three high-level sessions scheduled for the event.

The discussions in Johannesburg are structured to address the most pressing issues facing the planet. The Prime Minister will present India's perspective on rebuilding the global economy, ensuring no nation is left behind in the post-pandemic era. Furthermore, he will advocate for robust climate-resilient systems and the ethical governance of artificial intelligence. These topics align with the summit's three main sessions: "Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth," "A Resilient World," and "A Fair and Just Future for All."

In his departure statement, PM Modi highlighted the emotional significance of this gathering. He noted that the event builds upon the legacy of India's own G20 presidency in 2023, where New Delhi successfully spearheaded the induction of the African Union as a permanent member. He reiterated that India’s participation is deeply rooted in the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—One Earth, One Family, One Future.

Crucial Bilateral Talks on the Horizon

Beyond the multilateral sessions, high-stakes diplomacy is expected on the sidelines. In a move signaling a potential thaw in relations, PM Modi is slated to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This marks their second interaction of the year as both nations attempt to stabilize ties that were strained following the diplomatic fallout over the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case in 2023. Following a recent visit by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand to India, the two leaders are expected to discuss normalizing trade and diplomatic channels.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, further solidifying cooperation among major developing democracies.

South Africa’s presidency this year is centered on the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” focusing heavily on disaster resilience and debt sustainability for lower-income nations—goals that India strongly supports.
