Russian President Departs New Delhi After Strengthening Strategic Ties with India

The high-stakes diplomatic mission concluded on Wednesday evening as Russian President Vladimir Putin boarded his flight back to Moscow, marking the end of a significant two-day tour. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar was present at the airport to bid farewell to the Russian leader, bringing a close to the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. The visit, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the two nations, was defined by ambitious economic goals and warm cultural exchanges.

A Focus on Economic Growth and "Make in India"

The centerpiece of the summit was the robust discussion on economic cooperation. During the India-Russia Business Forum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed strong optimism regarding bilateral trade. While a target of USD 100 billion has been set for 2030, PM Modi voiced confidence that the two nations would surpass this milestone well ahead of schedule.

Addressing the forum, President Putin noted that trade volumes have already surged by nearly 80% over the last three years. He commended India’s "Make in India" initiative, acknowledging it as a driving force behind the country's technological sovereignty. The leaders also discussed opening up India's defense, space, and civil-nuclear sectors to private partnerships, signaling a modern shift in how the two historic allies collaborate.

Culinary Diplomacy and Cultural Gifts

Beyond politics, the Putin India visit was marked by exquisite hospitality. The state dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan stood out for its unique menu. In a move showcasing India's rich vegetarian heritage, the President of Russia was served a lavish, all-vegetarian thali. The curated meal included regional delicacies such as Kashmiri Gucchi Doon Chetin, Kaale Chane ke Shikampuri kebabs, and a main course featuring Zafrani Paneer and Palak Methi Mattar Saag.

In a gesture symbolizing the depth of their friendship, PM Modi presented President Putin with a collection of thoughtful gifts. These included a silver tea set from Murshidabad, premium Assam black tea, and a silver horse handcrafted in Maharashtra. Perhaps the most significant gift was a Russian translation of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, representing India’s spiritual contribution to the world.

A Commitment to Peace

On the geopolitical front, the leaders touched upon the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. PM Modi reiterated India's consistent stance, emphasizing that New Delhi remains firmly "on the side of peace" and advocates for a lasting resolution through dialogue. As President Putin departed, both nations reaffirmed their intent to "Go Together, Grow Together," solidifying a partnership that continues to evolve amidst a changing global order.
