Air India Plane crashes into Doctors' Hostel near Ahmedabad airport; Rescue ops underway

Ahmedabad, June 12: A London-bound Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, slamming into a doctors' hostel near the Ahmedabad airport, according to a senior police official. The aircraft, a Boeing model, was carrying 242 individuals, including 12 crew members.

 Providing an update from the crash site in the Meghani Nagar area, the senior Ahmedabad police officer stated that around 70 to 80 per cent of the area has been cleared. He appealed to the public to cooperate in facilitating a green corridor for ambulances.

 "After takeoff, the plane crashed into a building, identified as a doctors' hostel. Authorities arrived at the site within minutes. We have managed to clear most of the area. We urge citizens to support us in creating an unobstructed path for ambulances to reach hospitals," he said.

 Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Gujarat government deploying three teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 90 personnel from Gandhinagar. The Ahmedabad City Police has issued an emergency helpline for assistance and information: 07925620359.

 Following the incident, all flight operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad have been suspended until further notice. A spokesperson for SVPIA confirmed the temporary shutdown, citing safety and rescue priorities.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the crash occurred at approximately 1:38 PM, shortly after takeoff.
