Bhubaneswar, August 25: AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to establish a skin bank and tissue transplantation unit to provide advanced treatment support to burn patients, acid-attack survivors and others suffering from severe skin injuries.

The announcement was made as the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneswar marked its 10th anniversary. The proposed skin bank is expected to play a crucial role in providing skin allografts for patients with extensive burns and other serious injuries.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the department organized a two-day workshop featuring live surgical demonstrations on secondary procedures for brachial plexus injuries. The department said it has set a record in the country by conducting 10 consecutive live surgical demonstrations.

Over the past decade, the Burns and Plastic Surgery department has performed more than 7,000 reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. AIIMS Bhubaneswar is also providing skin allograft support to burn patients.

The institution has outlined several future initiatives, including the establishment of specialized subspecialty clinics, strengthening of simulation-based surgical training, expansion of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and the introduction of hand transplantation.

The programme was attended by Puri MP Dr Sambit Patra, former AIIMS Director and Padma Shri awardee Professor Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, and AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas.

The event was organized under the leadership of Dr Sanjay Kumar Giri, Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery. Dr Dilip Kumar Parida, Dr Manswini Mangaraj, Dr Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy and Medical Superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Abhijit Sarkar, among others, were present at the programme.
