AIIMS Bhubaneswar has set a new benchmark in cardiac care by successfully reviving a 24-year-old patient whose heart had stopped for nearly two hours.

Bhubaneswar, Nov 19:  AIIMS Bhubaneswar has set a new benchmark in cardiac care by successfully reviving a 24-year-old patient whose heart had stopped for nearly two hours. The young man, Subhakant Sahu, was brought back to life using the cutting-edge Extracorporeal Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (eCPR) procedure, marking a historic first for the region.

The medical breakthrough was led by Dr. Srikant Behera and his team, who utilized the advanced Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) technology to restore cardiac function after prolonged cardiac arrest. The eCPR procedure, which took 40 minutes, is considered one of the most advanced methods for treating patients experiencing severe heart failure or cardiac arrest, and it was used for the first time in Odisha during this case.

Subhakant’s heart had stopped for nearly two hours, a critical period during which his survival chances were slim. However, thanks to the quick action and expertise of the AIIMS Bhubaneswar medical team, his heart was revived and he was successfully stabilized. Remarkably, the patient was weaned off ECMO within 96 hours and is now on the road to recovery.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, praised the team's dedication and expertise. He said, "This achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of AIIMS Bhubaneswar to push the boundaries of medical science and provide the highest standard of care. It is a testament to our continued efforts to lead in healthcare innovation."

Subhakant’s mother, overcome with emotion, called the medical intervention a "miracle," expressing profound gratitude to the doctors for saving her son's life.

This extraordinary case not only highlights the potential of eCPR in saving lives but also reaffirms AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s position as a leader in advanced cardiac care and medical innovation in India.

The successful revival has been hailed as a beacon of hope for patients suffering from cardiac arrest, demonstrating the powerful impact of cutting-edge resuscitation technologies and marking a new era in life-saving medical practices.
