Bhubaneswar, December 26: Long-distance train travel on Friday got costlier in the country, with the Ministry of Railways increasing ticket prices. This is the second fare hike in less than six months.

Yesterday, the Ministry officially notified a hike in passenger train fares, with the revised ticket prices coming into effect from December 26.

Under the new revised structure, fares have been increased by 1 paise per kilometre for ordinary class journeys beyond 215 km, and by 2 paise per kilometre for non-AC classes of mail and express trains as well as AC classes across all trains.

The Ministry earlier said the increase in the prices will fetch Rs 600 crore to the national transporter till March 31, 2026.

On December 21, the Ministry of Railways had officially announced the decision of fare hike. This marks the second passenger fare revision this year, after an earlier hike implemented in July.

Here is all you need to know about the updated train fares

1. For Ordinary class (beyond 215 km), the fare will go up by 1 paise per km

2. For Mail/Express non-AC, the fare has been increased by 2 paise per km

3. For AC classes, the fares have gone up by 2 paise per km. For example, a passenger travelling 500 km in a non-AC coach will pay only Rs10 extra.

However, there will be no increase in the monthly season tickets of suburban trains. Similarly, there will be no change in fares of travel up to 215 km in ordinary class of other trains.

In a statement, the Railways said it has expanded its network and operations significantly over the last decade and thus requires greater manpower to cater to a higher level of operations and improved.
